Being a fan of 36point.com, I was excited to find their student design competition a few months ago. I quickly decided which class (that I was enrolled in already) would be easiest to get away with their ridiculous rules. Ultimately, digital printmaking, being more of a studio elective than a design elective, was an obvious choice. I explained the competition to my teacher, and she thought it was hilarious; so I went for it.
Just shy of $100 and a couple hundred curse words later, I was unhappy with the results. I battled over the moral issue of reprinting them as Artist’s Proofs and still entering the competition; after all, the assignment was completed a month before the competition deadline.
But I never did.
Donovan, from 36point, had known that I planned to enter because I had emailed them on a technical question regarding the rules, and told them about spreading the word around school. So later he emailed me and asked if I had an entry; I explained how I didn’t like it and didn’t plan to enter. I gave him a JPG of what it should have looked like, and he thought it was funny and asked to see the real print. So I took a picture and sent it. He replied that I had won a poster. I figured they had picked a winner and had a left-over that they wanted to give away.
Turns out, I was wrong.

Congrats – can I touch the Chip Kidd poster?!
